Celebrating diversity: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

“I’m proud of Philadelphia’s commitment to Welcoming Week for the past seven years. This week highlights the vibrancy of our immigrant and refugee communities and serves as a reminder that everyone belongs in Philadelphia.” — Mayor Jim Kenney, City of Philadelphia

The Certified Welcoming City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is a champion for Welcoming Week and the benefits of building inclusive communities. In 2023, the Philadelphia Office of Immigrant Affairs and its partners curated events that embodied the theme of “Destination Belonging.” Mayor Jim Kenney proclaimed Welcoming Week from September 7-17.

Over 15 events were hosted during Welcoming Week 2023, including a global craft market, an Indonesian festival, a bilingual business startup class offered in English and Spanish, and an Arabic storytelling event. Through these events and ongoing inclusion efforts, it’s clear that Philadelphia is committed to representing the many languages and cultures that make the city a vibrant place to live.

Additionally, Philadelphia was the second stop on Little Amal’s Walk Across America, making the city’s welcoming activities extra special. Partners across the city came together to walk with Amal during her two-day visit, and over 145 people participated in the celebration.

“Welcoming Week honors the contributions of immigrants and recognizes that our communities are stronger —and more prosperous — when we are welcoming.” — Alain Joinville, Director of Strategic Communications and Programs at Philadelphia Office of Immigrant Affairs
